The International Federation of Liberal Youth strongly supports the recent protests in Burma and calls upon the Burmese junta to step down from power.

The protests currently led by the Burmese monks in several cities around the country deserve the utmost attention of the international society. The bloodshed of the violent military crackdown of 1988 should not be repeated. IFLRY therefore calls upon the leaders speaking at the opening of the 62th General Assembly of the United Nations to press the Burmese government to step down from power and transfer government control to the National League for Democracy (NLD), the legitimate representative of the Burmese people, and its leader and Nobel Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi. The transition to democracy in Burma and the subsequent social and economic development should be given due support by the international community.

For years, the military regime in Burma has been one of the most brutal governments in the world through its continuous oppression of the Burmese people. It has not only thwarted the overwhelming pro-democracy election results in 1990 and imprisoned, tortured and murdered political opponents, ethnic minority leaders and other innocent civilians alike; it has also taken away any chances for the people of Burma to live a life in freedom and dignity through its disastrous economic policies, leading to widespread poverty and misery among the population.

The Burmese people are standing up again, and the international community should stand with them.

No, gracias.
