IFLRY statement on the assasination of Benazir Bhutto

Benazir Bhutto

The International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY) condemns in the highest possible terms the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. The Federation is alarmed at the spiraling political violence and the lack of justice under the regime of President Pervez Musharraf. We call on the Pakistani authorities to apprehend those responsible for the killing of Pakistan’s democratic icon and Liberal International’s Prize for Freedom recipient.

We condole with the members of her family, friends, to the Pakistan People’s Party and her sorrowing people, but we ask them to remain calm so as not to add to the instability in the great country of Pakistan. To react with violence would mean victory for the perpetrators of this heinous crime for they only want further chaos and instability in Pakistan.

We know that her legacy as a freedom fighter and human rights advocate is secured in the pantheon of our history. As we also hope that the sacrifices of Benazir Bhutto will not go to waste and will end in the fulfillment of her wishes and dream, that is the restoration of democracy and stability in her beloved Pakistan.

In accordance with a resolution adopted by the General Assembly of the International Federation of Liberal Youth in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, on the 14th and 15th of December 2007, we ask the regime of President Pervez Musharraf to allow free and fair parliamentary elections within the schedule mandated by the Constitution, to establish an independent commission to guarantee that such elections are free and fair, and to permit full and unfettered independent monitoring of such elections. We also ask the International Community through the United Nations to monitor and ensure a credible, free and fair elections that shall pave the way to stability and democratic Pakistan.
