Liberal foundations

Friedrich Naumann

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation and SILC is the Swedish International
In its daily work, especially in the field of political education and the promotion of liberalism, LYMEC has been cooperating for many years with two important liberal foundations that New Libertas would like to introduce to you.

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation

for Freedom was established in 1958 by a group of liberals under the leadership of Dr. Theodor Heuss, the first president of the Federal Republic of Germany. The foundation is an independent, nonprofit, nongovernmental organisation that is committed to promoting liberal policy and politics in Germany and abroad. It is named after Friedrich Naumann (1860-1919), a liberal politician and profound fighter for the political participation of ordinary people in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. Originating in Germany, the Foundation has won a reputation for promoting Freedom in human Dignity as the ultimate precondition of a society where people can live freely and in peace.

In this tradition the Foundation works in more than 50 countries in the world. Its international programme has worked closely together with LYMEC in several European countries, mostly in South-Eastern Europe and Eastern Europe in organising training, seminars and conferences on the spot to promote the ideas of liberalism for young people. The foundation has a long-lasting experience with political education and training in countries which are in transition. In the region altogether the foundation organises around 400 events each year. Besides the extensive international programme that LYMEC benefits from, the foundation has various educational centers allover Germany.

SILC is the Swedish International

Liberal Centre, the foundation for international cooperation of the Folkpartiet liberalerna or Liberal People’s Party. The goal of the projects SILC undertakes is to strengthen organisations and support individuals who develop and promote democracy and human rights. SILC trains those individuals and groups that take part in democracy building such as political parties, youth organisations, woman rights organisations and independent journalists. The BULK of SILC’s work takes place in totalitarian - and post totalitarian states such as Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cuba, Russia, Serbia and Ukraine
